Using automatic discounting for batches expiring soon
1. Navigate to the Preferences tab in the Freshly app.
2. Scroll to the Batch discounts section and enable the Apply discount checkbox.
3. Add the percentage discount you would like to add to the product variant when the batches are nearing their expiry date.
4. Set the "days before expiry date" to enable the discounts within a certain window when a product batch expires. E.g. if you want to enable discounts 3 months before a perishable product is known to expire, set the "days before expiry date" to 90 days.
5. Optionally, you can also set up tags for the products that have discounts added. This will help you create automatic "sale" or "clearance" collections that you can market to your customer. Check out this example store with a weekly special collection.
6. When the Apply discount is unchecked and saved, all current discounts and tags are automatically removed from the products. More information is available on this feature in this help doc.
How do discounts work?
When a product inventory batch falls within the specified discounting timeframe, Freshly applies the percentage discount specified in the preferences section. There are two possible scenarios here. Let's take a 10% discount for our example below:
- Product ($10.00) with no "compare at price": If a product has no compare at price, the original price of $10.00 will be set as the "compare at price" when the product is discounted from $10.00. The discounted price ($9.00) will be set as the current price of the product. Hence, the total discount the customer would see is 10% off ($10 to $9). When the discount is removed, the "compare at price" is unset and the price is reverted back to $10.00
- Product ($10.00) with existing "compare at price" ($20.00): If a product has a compare at price ($20.00), the original "compare at price" of $20.00 will remain as the "compare at price" when the product is discounted from $10.00. The discounted price ($9.00) will be set as the current price of the product. Hence, the total discount the customer would see is 55% off ($20 to $9). When the discount is removed, the "compare at price" is left at $20.00 and the price is reverted back to $10.00.
On your online store, you will see the product "compare at price" with a strikethrough and the new price as a sale price when the discount is applied.
📝 When a batch approaches its expiry date, the product is placed on discount until the batch quantity sells out or expires. Since there is no limit to the product quantity that can be purchased, in very rare cases, the quantity purchased on discounts may exceed the remaining discounted batch quantity. This means that some of the products may oversell the regular inventory as discounted. This should only occur if the customer adds multiple quantities (both discounted and regular inventory) to their cart.
How can my team keep track of discounts?
Your team can view all of the Freshly discounted products from the products page under the discounted tab:
Discounted inventory batches can be accessed either from the inventory batches page or directly from a single product page:
How will I be notified of the discounts?
Freshly sends out hourly discounted products digest emails (on the hour) which will have a list of all products discounted, with their discounted inventory batches, quantities, and expiry dates, as well as, original and discount prices. If new batches are added or removed from an existing list of already discounted products, you will see this product with the updated batches in the next hourly digest.
When the discount is removed, these products are also included in the notification emails:
