Getting started with Simple Discounts
Welcome to Simple Discounts! This app allows you to create and apply discounts to your product variants within your Shopify store. This guide will walk you through the process of creating and applying a time-based discount with a single tier.
Before you start
Install Simple Discounts from the Shopify App Store. Your first discount is free. To create more, you'll be asked to choose a plan.
You'll also need at least one product or collection in your store to discount.
Step 1: Choose a discount type
- In your Shopify admin, open Apps and select Simple Discounts.
- Click Create discount. You can also go to Discounts > Create discount in Shopify and pick one of the Simple Discounts types listed there.
- Choose the type you want:
- Mix-and-match bundle discount: customers pick items from one or more collections and get a discount.
- Quantity break discount: the discount grows as the quantity grows.
- Time-based discount: the discount applies as products get close to, or pass, their expiry date.
Step 2: Choose the method
Pick Discount code if customers should enter a code at checkout, or Automatic discount if it should apply on its own once the cart qualifies.
Shopify allows up to 25 active automatic discounts per store, including ones created by apps. For more detail, see Limit on automatic discounts.
Step 3: Set up the discount
Enter a title and the discount value, then set the conditions for your chosen type. Each type has its own guide with examples:
- Mix-and-match bundle discount: choose the collections and how many items customers pick. See How to build a mix-and-match bundle discount.
- Quantity break discount: set the quantity tiers and the discount for each. See How to build a quantity break discount.
- Time-based discount: set the discount percentage and when it applies, either a number of days before or after the product's expiry date. The expiry date is read from a date field on each product variant.
- Not using Freshly Inventory? You'll add the expiry date to each variant yourself. See How to manually set expiry dates for Shopify products and apply discounts.
- Using Freshly Inventory? See How to use time-based discounts with Freshly Inventory.
Step 4: Choose who can use it (optional)
If the discount should only apply to certain customers, such as wholesale buyers or loyalty members, limit it by customer tag.
Step 5: Save and test
- Click Save and make sure the discount is active.
- On your online store, add a qualifying product to the cart. For a time-based discount, use a variant whose expiry date falls inside the window you set.
- Check that the discount shows in the cart and at checkout, and that the final price is reduced by the amount you set.
Once it works as expected, you've created your first discount.
If your discount doesn't apply
- Check that the discount is active and the cart meets every condition, such as quantity or product eligibility.
- For a time-based discount, check that the variant has an expiry date and that today falls inside your days before or days after window.
- Check whether another discount is already applied and whether the two can be combined.
- If you use automatic discounts, check that you haven't reached Shopify's limit on active automatic discounts.
